Call to Worship

[based on Isaiah 55:2, 11-12; John 4:24]

Leader: Let us worship God, for whom our souls thirst and our bodies long.

People: Listen, listen to the Lord, and our souls will delight in the richest of fare.

Leader: We have come to hear the Word that God has sent.

People: God’s Word will not return empty but will accomplish through us his holy purpose.

Leader: Let us worship God in spirit and in truth.

People: Then we will go out with joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills will sing; the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Prayer of Confession

[Time of Silent Confession]

Leader: Let us continue in prayer.

People: Everlasting God, fountain of all life and the true home of every heart: we confess that our hearts are restless until they find rest in you. Lord so often we find that our hearts have been enslaved by selfish passion and base desire. We often seek after many things while neglecting the one thing we truly need. We do not always love you with our whole hearts. Help us to turn to you and find forgiveness. Lead us home, that we may again find in you our life and joy and peace. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

[based on Psalm 91: 14-15]

Leader: Hear the Good News. The Lord says, "Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name."

People: God says, "When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them and show them my salvation."

Leader: Let us receive the Good News of the Gospel: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

People: Praise God.

Prayer of Illumination

God of mercy, you promise never to break your covenant with us. Amid all the changing words of our generation, we ask that today we might hear and understand your eternal Word that does not change. Enable us to respond to your gracious promises with faithful and obedient lives. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

New Testament Reading: Philippians 4:10-19

10   I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.  11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. 

14   Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles.  15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only;  16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I was in need.  17 Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account.  18 I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.  19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Responding to God’s Word

Affirmation of Faith: Psalm 23

All: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Pastoral Prayer:

Dear Lord our God, we are thankful that you are constantly at work in our lives. Lord you are… 

    a help in times of difficulty 

    a strength in times of weakness 

    a guide when we feel lost and alone

 

We know that through Your Son, Jesus Christ, You have the power… 

    to transform lives 

    to mend broken relationships 

    to bring strength to the weary 

    and hope to the broken hearted. 

 

So we bring our worries and our burdens, our hopes and dreams, before your throne of grace today, knowing that you are the Lord of our lives and the hope of the world. 

 

Today we pray for world leaders that they may always seek the peace and security of our world. We pray for countries laid waste by war and conflict and dictatorship, We pray for the police and the emergency services,  as they seek the peace and security of our nation; and for ordinary people caught up in the events of world politics.

Leader: God of Grace in your mercy,

People: Hear our prayer.

                        

We pray for the world-wide Church, recognizing our fellowship with Christians in Africa, Asia  and throughout the developing world. We ask your blessing upon ministers and missionaries, medical workers and Aid Agencies whose task it is to feed the hungry, heal the sick and support the broken hearted. 

Leader: God of Grace in your mercy,

People: Hear our prayer.

Lord we pray for your church here in this place, for those that are thriving and those that have lost a sense of direction.  We give thanks for Union Church and its people and for all the gifts you have given us. Grant us your help and guidance and support. 

We too, have problems and needs and concerns— worries about ourselves, our families and those we love. 

We remember in our prayers today… 

    those who are worried about their health and what the future might hold 

    those who feel anxious or depressed or afraid 

    those who are in hospital 

    those with burdens they find impossible to share 

    those who still mourn the loss of someone dear to their heart. 

Hear us Lord as we pray in silence for those close to us in need.

Leader: God of Grace in your mercy,

People: Hear our prayer.

Finally Lord, we also pray for ourselves: that we might know the gentle authority of Jesus in all parts of our lives— leading us, guiding us, encouraging and directing us, now and always. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ who taught us to pray saying,

The Lord's Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
for thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory, forever. Amen.
