Preparing for God’s Word

“Here As in Heaven”

Call to Worship

[based on a Call to Worship written by Hippolytus, 3rd century Christian theologian and liturgist]

Leader: Come let us proclaim Christ's goodness together.

People: Christ is Risen-

Leader: The world below lies desolate
People: Christ is Risen-

Leader: The spirits of evil are fallen
People: Christ is Risen-

Leader: The angels of God are rejoicing
People: Christ is Risen-

Leader: His tomb is empty
People: Christ is Risen-

Leader: Indeed from the dead, the first of the sleepers, Glory and power are his forever and ever!

Prayer of Praise

[based on Romans 8:26-34]

Leader: Father God, Your extravagant love has called us together this morning. Long before we even knew You, You already knew us, and had chosen us to be part of Your own family— sisters and brothers with our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. What amazing love You have shown toward us! And so we come before You with praise and thanksgiving, offering You the worship of our hearts and lives, and opening ourselves to the prompting and leading of Your Holy Spirit. Receive our worship—our praise and prayers and offerings— through the intercession of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. May the time we spend here in Your presence bring honor and glory to Your name. Amen.

Hymn of Praise

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee"

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee,
Op’ning to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Wellspring of the joy of living,
Ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother,
All who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus,
Which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o’er us,
Brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us sunward
In the triumph song of life.

Thou our Father, Christ our Brother
All who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the joy divine.

Prayer of Confession

[Based on Romans 8]

Leader: Holy and gracious Father, from the highest court in the universe you have declared us completely forgiven, totally accepted and forever loved!” Yet when we find ourselves in a cauldron of adversity and difficulty, we easily succumb to despair
and our minds are seduced into believing the lie that you really don’t care about us. Forgive us for the ways that we doubt Your goodness and provision. We ask your pardon for not living in the security of Your love. A cross was raised to demonstrate
how deeply You love us but we confess that listening to other voices has resulted in our spiritual undoing. The Law scolds us reminding us of how unworthy we are of Your love. Our past and present sin screams of our frequent failures in loving You.
Death thunders at us and threatens to cut us off from your love. The devil deceptively roars at us saying that You God are angry at us and will destroy us. But in the midst of these confusing voices, the Spirit of Your Son cries in our hearts: “We are more than conquerors through Jesus who loves us.” Give us grace to hear that voice once again… Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Leader: Hear the Good News! God the Creator brings us new life, forgives, and redeems us.

People: In the name of Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Leader: Even those things that are hidden from memory, or are too deep for our words, are not beyond God's forgiving love, because God knows us completely.

People: In the name of Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Leader: Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are assured that there is no sin so terrible that God cannot forgive, no hurt so terrible that God cannot heal.

People: in the name Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Leader: To all whom turn from sin in sorrow, to all who turn to God in hope, God's word of grace is that we are accepted, we are forgiven, we are loved.

People: In the name of Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Leader: Thanks be to God.

Hymn of Response

"O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go"

O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O Light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

Hearing God's Word

Prayer of Illumination

Leader: O God Most High! Everlasting Lord, mighty and lifted up! Grant to us your Holy Spirit, that in these words of Scripture our hearts might be lifted up and our minds set on heavenly realities, through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, Amen.

Hymn of Preparation

"Soldiers of Christ, Arise"

Soldiers of Christ, arise,
And put your armor on,
Strong in the strength which God supplies,
Through His eternal Son;
Strong in the Lord of Hosts,
And in His mighty pow'r,
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts
Is more than conqueror.

Stand then in His great might,
With all His strength endued;
And take, to arm you for the fight,
The panoply of God,
That, having all things done,
And all your conflicts past,
Ye may o'ercome through Christ alone,
And stand complete at last.

Pray, without ceasing pray,
Your Captain gives the word;
His summons cheerfully obey,
And call upon the Lord:
To God your every want
In instant prayer display;
Pray always; pray, and never faint;
Pray, without ceasing pray.

From strength to strength go on;
Wrestle, and fight, and pray;
Tread all the powers of darkness down,
And win the well-fought day:
Still let the Spirit cry
In all His soldiers, "Come!"
Till Christ the Lord descend from high,
And take the conquerors home.

“Elevator Pitch (The Whole Gospel in One Chapter): More Than Conquerers"

Responding to God’s Word

Profession of Faith

[The Apostles Creed]

All: I believe in God the Father, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord;

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary;

Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;

The forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving

“Great is Thy Faithfulness"

Great is Thy faithfulness,  O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

[Based on 1 Timothy 1:17]

Leader: As we leave this place, to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, may there be all honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction Response

"May You Run and Not Be Weary"

May you run and not be weary
May your heart be filled with song
And may the love of God
Continue to give you hope
And keep you strong
And may you run and not be weary
May your life be filled with joy
And may the road you travel
Always lead you home
