Preparing for God’s Word

Prelude

"Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us"

play song

Call to Worship

[based on Acts 2:17-21]

Leader: We read in Scripture that God will pour out the Spirit on all flesh.

People: Glory be to God, who strengthens us.
Leader: Our daughters and sons shall prophesy, our old ones shall dream dreams, and our young ones shall see visions.

People: Glory be to God, who strengthens us.
Leader: All who call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered.

People: Glory be to God, who strengthens us.

Leader: Come, let us call upon the name of the Lord.

Hymn of Praise

“Holy, Holy, Holy”

play song

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,

Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,

Though the eye made blind by sin Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy; there is none besideThee,

Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Generous God, you send us the Spirit of courage, but so often we are afraid. You send us the Spirit of truth,
but so often we cling to our illusions. You send us the Spirit of healing, but so often we cannot let go of our hurts.

People: Breathe on us, Breath of God.

Leader: Holy Spirit of forgiveness, come to us again: shake our hearts, set our souls on fire with your love: send us out into the world rejoicing in your power.
People: Breathe on us, Breath of God.

[time of silent confession]

Leader: Lord, we hold out to you all our particular burdens of guilt and sin, and we ask for your help to live the way of your truth and love.

People: Breathe on us, Breath of God. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

[based on Ezekiel 36:24-28]

God tells us in Scripture, "I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees. You will be my people, and I will be your God.”

Friends in Christ: by the power of the Spirit, we are united with Christ and given a new spirit. Let us all live in the joy and peace of that assurance. Praise God.

Hymn of Response

”Breathe on Me, Breath of God”

play song

Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me,  Breath of God, until my heart is pure;
Until with Thee I will one will, to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly Thine,

Until this earthly part of me glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe  on me, Breath of God, so I shall never die.
But live with Thee the perfect life, of Thine eternity. Amen

Hearing God's Word

Prayer of Illumination

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit,
that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed,
we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

Hymn of Preparation

 “Spirit of the Living God"

play song

Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me
Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me
Melt me, mold me, fill me,  use me
Spirit of the Living God fall fresh on me

“Journey with the Spirit: The Spirit Moves"

Responding to God’s Word

Prayer of the People

Leader: Gracious God, we thank you for the power of your Holy Spirit.
We ask that we may be strengthened to serve you better. Lord, come and bless us
People: And fill us with your Spirit.
Leader: We thank you for the wisdom of your Holy Spirit.
We ask you to help us understand better your will for us. Lord, come and bless us
People: And fill us with your Spirit.
Leader: We thank you for the peace of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to keep us confident of your love wherever you call us. Lord, come and bless us

People: And fill us with your Spirit.
Leader: We thank you for the healing of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to bring reconciliation and wholeness
where there is division, sickness, and sorrow. Lord, come and bless us
People: And fill us with your Spirit.

Leader: We thank you for the fruit of your Holy Spirit.
We ask you to reveal in our lives the love of Jesus. Lord, come and bless us
People: And fill us with your Spirit.
Leader: Generous God, we are a people who need your Spirit. It doesn't take much effort for us to see many places in the world and even here at home where there is need for your power, wisdom, peace, healing, and fruit of the Spirit. God, here in the United States we need to look no further than the situation regarding George Floyd's death. God we pray for those who for whatever reason feel that they have no voice in our nation. We pray for the family who are grieving over George Floyd's death. We pray for those who have experienced serious acts of oppression and racism in their lives. We pray for a change in heart of any who believe that violence and destruction is a good way to express their feelings. We pray for a change in heart of any police officer who has forgotten what it means to serve. Lord, we pray for your help, your guidance, and your safety for our officers and other first reponders who are serving the public responsibly. Our hearts particularly go out to those officers who are also trying to serve you in this challenging time. We pray for governement officials who simply hope to keep their city's safe. God, we need your Spirit moving in this world. Clearly we can't get right on our own. Lord, come and bless us.

People: And fill us with your Spirit.

Leader: In your mercy fill us with your Spirit, hear our prayer, and make us one in heart and mind to serve you in Christ, who taught us pray saying:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Profession of Faith

[The Nicene Creed- Final Section]

All: We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving

“As the Wind"

play song

As the wind song through the trees, as the stirring of the breeze,

So it is with the Spirit of God, as the heart made strangely warm,

As the voice within the storm, so it is with the Spirit of God.

Never seen, ever known where this wind has blown

Bringing life, bringing power to the world, as the dancing tongues of fire,

As the soul's most deep desire, so it is with the Spirit of God.

As the rainbow after rain, as the hope that's born again,

So it is with the Spirit of God, as the green in the spring,

As a kite on a string, so it is with the Spirit of God,

Making worlds that are new, making peace come true,

Bringing gifts, bringing love to the world, as the rising of the yeast,

As the wine at the feast, so it is with the Spirit of God.

Benediction

You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace

The mountains and the hills will break forth before you

There'll be shouts of joy and all the trees of the field

Will clap, will clap their hands

And all the trees of the field will clap their hands

The trees of the field will clap their hands

The trees of the field will clap their hands

While you go out with joy
