Call to Worship

[based on Psalm 118:22-24; Ezekiel 36:26-27; Philippians 4:4]

Leader: This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

People: Rejoice in the Lord always; again we say, rejoice!

Leader: Jesus Christ has saved us! The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. It is the Lord's doing;  it is marvelous in our eyes.

People: Rejoice in the Lord always; again we say, rejoice!

Leader: The Lord promises to give us a new heart, and he will put a new Spirit within us. He will remove the heart of stone from our flesh and give us a heart of flesh. And he will put his Spirit within us, and cause us to walk in all his statutes.

People: Rejoice in the Lord always; again we say, rejoice!:

Hymn of Praise

“When Morning Gilds the Skies”

When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries: may Jesus Christ be praised!
Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair: may Jesus Christ be praised!

Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find: may Jesus Christ be praised!
Or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this: may Jesus Christ be praised!

Let earth's wide circle round in joyful notes resound:  may Jesus Christ be praised!

Let air and sea and sky from depth to height reply:  may Jesus Christ be praised!

Be this, while life is mine, my song of love divine: may Jesus Christ be praised!

Sing this eternal song through all the ages long: may Jesus Christ be praised!

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Gracious God, who pours out freely the gift of your Holy Spirit: we confess before you and to each other
that we have failed to recognize this most precious gift.

People: Lord have mercy.

Leader: We often have been satisfied with ordinary things, suspicious of unfamiliar things, and blind to spiritual things.

People: Lord have mercy.

Leader: Cleanse us, O God, with your celestial fire.Burn away our presumptuous self-sufficiency, and open us in faith to receive the renewing touch of your hand.

People: Lord have mercy, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

[based on Romans 8:1-2, 11]

There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life sets us free from the law of sin and death. And if the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us, God who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to our mortal bodies through the Spirit, who lives in us. In Christ we are forgiven, redeemed, and saved. Praise God!

Hymn of Response

        ”Come Thou Almighty King”

Come, Thou Almighty King, help us Thy name to sing, help us to praise.

Father, all glorious, O’er all victorious, come, and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

Come, Thou incarnate Word, turn on Thy mighty sword, our prayer attend:

Come, and Thy people bless, and give Thy word success; Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Come, holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour:
Thou who Almighty art, now rule in every heart, and ne’er from us depart, Spirit of power.

To the great One in Three, eternal praises be, hence evermore!
Thy sov’reign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.

Hearing God's Word

Prayer of Illumination

Heavenly Father, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

New Testament Reading

Romans 8:22-27

Sermon

“Journey with the Spirit: The Spirit Intercedes"

Responding to God’s Word

Prayer of the People

God our Father, fill our lives with your compassion so that we may live in the generosity of your forgiveness.
We pray today for those who cannot believe or give their lives in the service of others. Lord, illuminate their hearts. Lord, in your mercy,

All: Hear our prayer.

We pray today for the church, acting as your hands and feet all over the world: proclaiming your truth, caring for hurting (body, heart and soul), reaching out to the poor, encouraging the lonely, broken hearted, and persecuted, providing hope and peace in places where little of either is easily found. Lord, make your light shine on your church. Lord, in your mercy,

All: Hear our prayer.

O Christ, light from above, we ask that you would come and visit all those who are in darkness; show them the way of your love. Support those who are going through times of difficulty and discouragement. God, we know that you are the source of confidence and life. God hear us as we pray for those those you have placed on our mind who need your help.

[time of silence for personal prayer]

Lord, in your mercy,

All: Hear our prayer.

Gracious God, guide us by your Spirit so that we may accomplish the will of your love; give us new hearts. We ask all this in the name of your Son who taught us to pray saying:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Profession of Faith

[The Apostles Creed]

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven,

and sitteth on the right hand

of God the Father almighty.

From thence he shall come

to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving

“There's a Sweet Sweet Spirit in this Place"

There's a sweet, sweet, Spirit in this place and I know that it's the spirit of the Lord
There are sweet expressions on each face and I know they feel the presence of the Lord

Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove, stay right here with us filling us, with Your love
And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise; without out a doubt we'll know
That we have been revived when we shall leave this place

There are blessing you cannot receive till you know Him in His fullness and believe

You're the one to profit when you say, "I am goin to walk with Jesus all the way."

Benediction

[Based on Romans 15:13]

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

“The Trees of the Field,” Chorale version (Oasis Chorale)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxKvuhP7Cw8

You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace

The mountains and the hills will break forth before you

There'll be shouts of joy and all the trees of the field

Will clap, will clap their hands

And all the trees of the field will clap their hands

The trees of the field will clap their hands

The trees of the field will clap their hands

While you go out with joy
