Preparing for God’s Word

Prelude

“My King and My God”

Call to Worship

[based on Psalm 95:1-7]

Leader: O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

People: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our maker!

Leader: For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.

People: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our maker!

Leader: The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.

People: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our maker!

Leader: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

Hymn of Adoration

”All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”

All hail the pow'r of Jesus' Name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all!
Bring forth the royal diadem

And crown Him Lord of all!

Ye chosen seed of Israel's race,
Ye ransomed from the fall,
Hail Him Who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all!
Hail Him Who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all!

Lord of all! You are Lord of all!

Lord of all! You are Lord of all!

Let every kindred, every tribe,
On this terrestrial ball,
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all!
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all!

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Sovereign God, we confess that although we willingly say that “Jesus is King,” we often fail to bow our knees before him. Instead, we often grant our allegiances to relationships we form in this world and the material goods we acquire. Lord in your mercy,
People: Hear our prayers of confession.

Leader: Lord hear us in this time of silence as we confess those other things we make "kings" we have in our own lives.

[time of silent prayer]

Leader: Lord in your mercy,

People: Hear our prayers of confession.

Leader: Grant us the humility to bow before you, the Ruler of all nations, and help us be loyal servants in your kingdom. Through your son, the King of kings and Lord of lords we pray, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon:

[Based on Colossians 1:13-14]
Through the crucified blood of Christ the King and the glorified body of Christ who defeated sin and death, we have been given pardoned by God. Hear the Good News, “God has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, proclaiming Jesus as Lord of all.

Prayer of Illumination

O God Most High! Everlasting Lord, mighty and lifted up! Grant to us your Holy Spirit, that in these words of Holy Scripture
our hearts might be lifted up and our minds set on heavenly realities, that contemplating the reign of our Lord might fill us anew with the hope and joy of his eternal kingdom. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

New Testament Reading: Acts 6:1-7

6:1   In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.  2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.  3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

5   This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.  6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

7   So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Responding to God’s Word

Affirmation of Faith

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of Response

“I Love to Tell the Story”

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love;
I love to tell the story, because I know ’tis true,
It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do.

Refrain:
I love to tell the story,
’Twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story
Of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, ’tis pleasant to repeat,
What seems each time I tell it more wonderfully sweet;
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word.

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest;
And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,
’Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.

Prayer of Dedication

Leader: Creator of all, the earth is yours, the world and all who live in it. You have entrusted us with gifts—
time, talent, energy, money— and asked us to use them to build your kingdom.
People: With thanks and praise we respond to your call.
Leader: We bring a portion of these gifts you have given in our pledge card this year, returning to you just a small portion of the great generosity you have shown to us.

People: With thanks and praise we respond to your call.

Leader: Lord, we offer ourselves, our lives, our hopes and fears, our dollars, and our hours to you this day. We commit ourselves to work for your world, to love and serve as you direct us.

People: With thanks and praise we respond to your call.
Leader: We ask your blessing on this as we seek to follow you with heart, mind, and soul. Bless also these gifts, our investment in your future, that they may multiply in faith, hope, and love. And all God's people said,
People: Amen.

Anthem

Hymn of Thanksgiving

"Today We All Are Called To Be Disciples"

Today we are all called to be disciples of the Lord,
To help to set the captives free, make plow-share out of sword,
To feed the hungry, quench their thirst, make love and peace our fast,
To serve the poor and homeless first, our ease and comfort last.

God made the world and at its birth ordained our human race
To live as stewards of the earth, responding to God's grace.
But we are vain and sadly proud, we sow not peace but strife,
Our discord spreads a deadly cloud that threatens all of life.

Pray justice may come rolling down as in a mighty stream,
With righteousness in field and town to cleanse us and redeem.
For God is longing to restore an earth where conflicts cease,
A world that was created for a harmony of peace.

May we in service to our God act out the living word

And walk the road the saints have trod till all have seen and heard

As stewards of the earth may we give thank in one accord

To God who calls us all to be disciples of the Lord

Benediction

[Based on Revelation 1:4-6]

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne,
and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction Response

"On Eagles Wings"

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord
Who abide in His shadow for life
Say to the Lord, "My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!"

Refrain:

And He will raise you up on eagles' wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand

The snare of the fowler will never capture you
And famine will bring you no fear
Under His wings your refuge, His faithfulness your shield

For to His angels He's given a command
To guard you in all of your ways
Upon their hands they will bear you up
Lest you dash your foot against a stone
