Gathering for God’s Word

Prelude

Choral Introit

 #192, "Shine, Jesus, Shine," vs. 1, 2

Lord, the light of your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness, shining
Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us
Set us free by the truth you now bring us
Shine on me, shine on me

Refrain:

Shine, Jesus, shine
Fill this land with the Father's glory
Blaze, Spirit, blaze
Set our hearts on fire
Flow, river, flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth your word
Lord, and let there be light

Lord, I come to your awesome presence
From the shadows into your radiance
By the blood I may enter your brightness
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness
Shine on me, shine on me

Call to Worship

[based on Revelation 7:9-10]

Leader: And there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands.

People: They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

Leader: Today our voices join this ongoing heavenly hymn of praise. In Jesus’ name, let us worship God!

Preparing for God's Word

Hymn of Adoration

#1, "Holy, Holy, Holy"

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee

Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee

Who wert and art, and evermore shalt be

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee

Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see

Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee

Perfect in power, love, and purity

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea

Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessed Trinity

Prayer of Confession

[time of personal silent confession]

All: Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. Forgive our indifference to your will. You have commanded us to speak, but too often we have been silent. You have called us to do what is just, but we have too often been fearful. Have mercy on us, when we are faithless servants. Keep before us faithful people to follow so that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, we may grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to the praise of your holy name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

[based on Ephesians 2:19-22]

Leader: Hear the Good News! We are no longer strangers and aliens, but citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God.
People: We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as our cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom we also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

Leader: Through the cross and standing on the rock of Christ, we are forgiven. Praise God.

Hearing God's Word

Children's Message

Ages 12 and under gather up front as congregation sings “Jesus Loves Me.” After the Children's Message, the children may return to sit with their families.

Hymn of Preparation

"By All Your Saints Still Striving"

By all Your saints still striving
For all Your saints at rest,
Your holy name, O Jesus,
Forevermore be blest!
You rose, our King victorious,
That they might wear the crown
And ever shine in splendor
Reflected from Your throne.

Apostles, prophets, martyrs

And all the noble throng

Who wear the spotless raiment

And raise the ceaseless song

For them and those who witness

Is only known to You

By walking in their footsteps

We give You praise anew

Then let us praise the Father
And worship God the Son
And sing to God the Spirit,
Eternal Three in One,
Till all the ransomed number
Who stand before the throne,
Ascribe all power and glory
And praise to God alone.

Prayer of Illumination

New Testament Reading: Hebrews 9: 23-28

23   It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.  24 For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.  25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.  26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.  27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,  28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Responding to God’s Word

Affirmation of Faith

[Apostles Creed]

People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Choral Anthem

"I Sing a Song of the Saints of God"

Prayers of Thanksgiving

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

Leader: This day we celebrate as together we proclaim:

People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

[various prayers]

Leader: For Your love and faithfulness,

People: We praise you, O God.

The Lord's Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn of Response

#326, "For All the Saints," vs. 1, 2, 3

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy name, O Jesus, be forever bless’d.
Alleluia, alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might,
Thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight

Thou in the darkness drear, their one true light.
Alleluia, alleluia!

Oh, bless’d communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine,
Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.
Alleluia, alleluia!
