Call to Worship

[Based on Psalm 95:1-7]

Leader: O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

People: Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

Leader: For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

People: In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.

Leader: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

People: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

Preparing for God's Word

Hymn of Adoration

#307, "God of Grace & God of Glory

God of grace and God of glory,
On Thy people pour Thy power;
Crown the ancient church's story;
Bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
For the facing of this hour,
For the facing of this hour.

Lo! the hosts of evil round us,
Scorn Thy Christ, assail His ways!
From the fears that long have bound us,
Free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
For the living of these days,
For the living of these days.

Cure Thy children's warring madness,
Bend our pride to Thy control;
Shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
Rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
Lest we miss Thy Kingdom's goal,
Lest we miss Thy Kingdom's goal.

Save us from weak resignation
To the evils we deplore;
Let the gift for Thy salvation
Be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
Serving Thee whom we adore,
Serving Thee whom we adore.

Prayer of Confession

[silent individual prayers of confession]

All: Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you. Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

[Based on 1 Timothy 1:15 & 1 Peter 2:24]

Leader: Hear the Good News: This saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

People: He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good.

Leader: In name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

People: Thanks be to God.

Hearing God's Word

Hymn of Preparation

#2203, "In His Time"

In His time, in His time,
He makes all things beautiful in His time.
Lord, please show me everyday
As You’re teaching me Your way,
That you do just what You say in Your time.

In Your time, in Your time,
You make all things beautiful in Your time.
Lord, my life to You I bring,
May each song I have to sing
Be to You a lovely thing i
n Your time

Prayer of Illumination

New Testament Reading: Hebrews 4: 12-16

12   For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.  13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

14   Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin.  16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Responding to God’s Word

Hymn of Response

#187, "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us"

Saviour, like a shepherd lead us:
Much we need your tender care;
In your pleasant pastures feed us;
For our use your folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!
You have bought us; we are Yours.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!
You have bought us, we are Yours.

We are yours; in love befriend us;
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Your flock from sin, defend us;
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!
Hear your children when we pray.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!
Hear your children when we pray.

You have promised to receive us

Poor and sinful though we be

You have mercy to relieve us

Grace to cleanse and power to free

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Early let us turn to You.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Early let us turn to You.

Early let us seek Your favor;
Early let us do Your will.
Blessed Lord and only Savior,
With Your love our spirits fill:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!
You have loved us; love us still.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!
You have loved us; love us still.

Prayers of the People

People: And also with you.

Leader: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

People: It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

[various prayers]

People: And may your Kingdom come.

The Lord's Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
