Gathering for God’s Word

Choral Introit

 “Hallelujah (Your Love Is Amazing)”

Your love is amazing
Steady and unchanging
Your love is a mountain
Firm beneath my feet

Your love is a mystery
How you gently lift me
When I am surrounded
Your love carries me

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Your love makes me sing
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Your love makes me sing

Your love is surprising
I can feel it rising
All the joy that's growing
Deep inside of me

Every time I see you
All your goodness shines through
I can feel this God song
Rising up in me

Time of Silence & Ringing of the Bell

Call to Worship

[inspired by Psalm 32]

Leader: Happy are those whose sins are forgiven.

People: Happy are those to whom God attributes no wrong, those in whose heart there is no deceit.
Leader: When we keep silent about our wrongdoings,
our lives disintegrate with worry and guilt;
People: when we struggle to hide from God,
the heaviness in our hearts consumes our strength.
Leader: But when we seek your truth, O God,
and acknowledge our sin, we experience your forgiveness.
People: Help us to reach out to you in prayer, O God, and know your protection and strength.
Leader: Surrounded by your grace-filled presence
and filled with your undeserved forgiveness,

People: we sing your praise; we shout for joy.

Leader: Stubbornness melts away and tempers are controlled  when we listen for God’s word and follow God’s direction for our lives.
People: When we fail to listen, and persist in following other than God’s way, our hearts are hardened and our lives tormented.
Leader: But when we put our trust in God, we are surrounded and filled with God’s steadfast love.
People: Rejoice and shout for joy all those who are upright in heart.

Preparing for God's Word

Hymn of Adoration

#450, "Be Thou My Vision

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord
Thou my soul's shelter, and thou my high tower

Raise thou me heaven-ward, O Power of my power

Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all

Prayer of Confession

[time of personal silent confession]

All: Gracious God, we thankfully remember the life of our Lord Jesus Christ on this earth. Yet we also acknowledge our failure to respond earnestly and faithfully to his witness.  We often mistake Jesus as merely a helper, friendly companion, or problem-solver, failing to see him as the ruler of all creation. We do not appreciate the depth of his passion and sacrifice on the cross, failing to truly acknowledge him as the only way to salvation. Lord we confess that we do not always walk faithfully in the way of Jesus Christ. Forgive us, we pray, and bring us ever more fully into the joy of union with Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

[based on Hebrews 7:25]

Leader: Jesus is able to completely and utterly save those who approach God through him, because he continually speaks with God for them. This is the Good News.

People: In and through Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Hearing God's Word

Children's Message

Ages 12 and under gather up front as congregation sings “Jesus Loves Me.” After the Children's Message, the children may return to sit with their families.

Hymn of Preparation

#223, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross"

When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
save in the death of Christ, my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

Prayer of Illumination

New Testament Reading: Hebrews 7: 23-28

23   Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;  24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.  25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

26   Such a high priest meets our need — one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.  27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.  28 For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

“Jesus is Greater... Once for All”

Responding to God’s Word

Affirmation of Faith

[The Apostles Creed ]

People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of Response

#263, "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name"

All hail the power of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all!

Yr chosen seed of Israel's race
Ye ransomed from the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.
Hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all!

Let every kindred, every tribe
on this terrestrial ball
to him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.
To him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all!

Oh, that with yonder sacred throng
we at his feet may fall!
We'll join the everlasting song
and crown him Lord of all.
We'll join the everlasting song
and crown him Lord of all.

Prayers of the People

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

[various prayers]

Leader: God of grace and mercy.

People: Hear our prayer.

The Lord's Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
