Preparing for God’s Word

Call to Worship

[based on 103:1-5]

Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

People: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Leader: Do not forget all of God's benefits— he who forgives all our iniquity, who heals our diseases, and who redeems our life from the Pit.

People: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Leader: Our God crowns us with steadfast love and mercy, satisfies us with good as long as we live, and renews us to be like the eagle.

People: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Hymn of Praise

“Come Thou Fount"

Come thou fount of every blessing; tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer. hither by thy help I come
And I hope by thy good pleasure safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger wondering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor, daily I'm constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Heavenly Father, as we look to where you might wish to lead us as we walk with Christ, we need to confess to you all of those places that persist in pulling us backward. Through admitting our failures and sharing with you our sin, we would like to put away those things that nibble and nag at us, the things that hold us back from following you with our all. With boldness, then, we give to you Lord all the places where we squander time and talent, good intentions and better ideas, and opportunities for growth and occasions for grace.

People: Forgive us Holy Triune God; Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter.

Leader: We admit that we have often taken care of ourselves while others have stood in line. Sometimes as we have carefully pursued our own interests, we've done it at the expense of others: family, friends, community, and church.

People: Forgive us Holy Triune God; Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter.

Leader: Lord, we agonize with the memories of the many ways our plans have fallen short of what you would want from us.

People: Forgive us Holy Triune God; Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter.

Leader:Gracious God, we confess our individual regrets and remorse in silence to you now.

[time of silent prayer]

Leader: Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Hymn of Response

        ”Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Responding to God’s Word

Hymn of  Grace

 “O Lord, You’re Beautiful

O Lord, you’re beautiful, your face is all I seek

And when your eyes are on this child, your grace abounds to me

O Lord, you’re wonderful, your touch is all I need

And when your hand is on this child, your healing I receive

Profession of Faith

[The Apostles Creed]

All: I believe in God the Father, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord;

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary;

Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;

The forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the People

Leader: Gracious God, bless your church throughout the world by your Holy Spirit and draw the scattered flock of Christ into a visible unity. Lord we ask that you would make your church a sign of hope to our divided world. Grant that we who bear your Son’s name might be instruments of your peace, bringing your grace and hospitality to our homes, our communities, our nation, and our world.

[Silent Prayer for places in need of God's grace, peace, and hospitality.]

Leader: Lord, Rain your Grace upon us.

People: And Grant us Your Peace

Leader: O God, in your loving purpose answer our prayers. In all things for which we pray, give us the will, ability, and help to help bring them about. We ask this all in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray saying:

People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Blessed are you, God of all creation; through your goodness we have given us so many gifts to share. Lord we ask that you would accept all that is given to you today through these offerings for your glory. And Lord as we leave this place we ask that you would help us keep our eyes open for all the ways we can be in service of your kingdom.Blessed be God forever. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving

“How Firm a Foundation"

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can be said than to you God hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.”

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.”

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.”

“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake!”

Closing Hymns

“Shine, Jesus, Shine”

Lord, the light of your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness, shining
Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us
Set us free by the truth you now bring us
Shine on me, shine on me

Shine, Jesus, shine
Fill this land with the Father's glory
Blaze, Spirit, blaze
Set our hearts on fire
Flow, river, flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth your word
Lord, and let there be light
