Preparing for God’s Word

Prelude

Call to Worship

[based on Psalm 148]

Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his host! Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!

People: Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord Most High. Amen.

Leader: Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the Lord. for he commanded and they were created.He established them for ever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

People: Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord Most High. Amen.

Leader: Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command!
People: Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord Most High. Amen.

Leader: Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth!
People: Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord Most High. Amen.

Leader: Young men and women alike, old and young together! Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the Lord!

People: Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord Most High. Amen.

Hymn of Praise

“I Sing the Mighty Power of God”

I sing the mighty pow’r of God, that made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey.

I sing the goodness of the Lord, who filled the earth with food,
He formed the creatures with the Word, and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, where’er I turn my eye,
If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky.

There’s not a plant or flow’r below, but makes Thy glories known,
And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Thy throne;
While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care;
And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there.

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Triune God, we praise you as the God of love and life. Even though Jesus prayed that we would be drawn together to you as one, we confess that we often fail to live in unity with each other and with you.

People: Forgive us, Lord.

We break our communion through hostile words and unkind actions. We long for your Spirit to heal us and to correct us. We long for you to help us experience communion with you and with each other.
People: Forgive us, Lord.

As we gather around your Word, dependent on your grace, we commit ourselves to live more fully in the unity you desire. Through Christ, our Lord, we pray.

People: Forgive us, Lord. Amen

Assurance of Pardon

[based on Romans 8:15-17]

Hear the Good News! We did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but we have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. In Christ, by the power of the Spirit, we are forgiven. Thanks be to the Triune God.

Hymn of Response

        ”Let All Things Now Living”

Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving
To God the creator triumphantly raise.
Who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us,
By guiding us on to the end of our days.
God’s banners are o’er us, His light goes before us,
A pillar of fire shining forth in the night.
Till shadows have vanished, all fearfulness banished
As forward we travel from light into light.

By  law God enforces, the stars in their courses
And sun in its orbit obediently shine;
The hills and the mountains, the rivers and fountains,
The deeps of the ocean proclaim God divine.
We too should be voicing our love and rejoicing;
With glad adoration a song let us raise
Till all things now living unite in thanksgiving:
“To God in the highest, Hosanna and praise!”

Hymn of Preparation

 “Morning Has Broken"

Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing.  Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dew fall on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where God’s feet pass

Mine is the sunlight!

Mine is the morning!
Born of the One Light Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning

God’s recreation of the new day

Sermon

“Made in the Image of the Triune God"

Responding to God’s Word

Profession of Faith

[The Apostles Creed]

All: I believe in God the Father, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord;

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary;

Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;

The forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving

“Today We All Are Called to be Disciples"

Today we are all called to be
Disciples of the Lord,
To help to set the captives free,
Make plow-share out of sword,
To feed the hungry, quench their thirst,
Make love and peace our fast,
To serve the poor and homeless first,
Our ease and comfort last.

God made the world and at its birth
Ordained our human race
To live as stewards of the earth,
Responding to God's grace.
But we are vain and sadly proud,
We sow not peace but strife,
Our discord spreads a deadly cloud
That threatens all of life.

Pray justice may come rolling down
As in a mighty stream,
With righteousness in field and town
To cleanse us and redeem.
For God is longing to restore
An earth where conflicts cease,
A world that was created for
A harmony of peace.

May we in service to our God
Act out the living word,
And walk the road the saints have trod
Till all have seen and heard.
As stewards of the earth may we
Give thanks in one accord
To God who calls us all to be
Disciples of the Lord.

Benediction

Closing Hymns

“Shine, Jesus, Shine”

Lord, the light of your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness, shining
Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us
Set us free by the truth you now bring us
Shine on me, shine on me

Shine, Jesus, shine
Fill this land with the Father's glory
Blaze, Spirit, blaze
Set our hearts on fire
Flow, river, flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth your word
Lord, and let there be light
